Kathy Murillo's artistic journey is a dynamic exploration of identity, belonging, and societal constructs, navigated through a lens of queer feminism and intersectionality. Drawing from a diverse array of mediums, including painting, collage, works on paper, video, sculpture, performance and interventionist works, Murillo continually challenges and redefines their artistic expression.
Central to Murillo's practice is an unwavering commitment to exploring the complexities of belonging. Through a diverse range of techniques and themes, they interrogate emotional awareness, societal dynamics, and the intricate interplay of identities and experiences within contemporary society. Inspired by personal encounters with the Dutch legal system, Murillo delves into the complexities of justice, particularly in cases of sexual aggression. Symbolic imagery such as the altar of justice and the relentless swing of the gavel sheds light on systemic failures that perpetuate such crimes, challenging the notion of justice at the expense of survivors.
Murillo states, "I don't see myself as separate from my practice; I embody my practice in every way. I don't believe in a separation between the art and your own heart, body, and brain. I believe everything is one. My art is just a piece of me, which becomes a piece of the audience when the interaction starts."
Their projects are deeply influenced by personal experiences tied to current social issues, emotional awareness, contemplation, and speculation. Murillo prioritizes intersectionality to explore the intricate connections between these elements and bring untold stories to light.
Murillo’s artistic practice serves as a catalyst for dialogue, empathy, and understanding, amplifying marginalized voices and fostering inclusivity within the art world and beyond.
